Six Moons Design on solo hiking

Those wonderful people at Six Moons Design (an Oregon company after all!) posted a brilliant piece on solo hiking.

As an experienced solo hiker, with some miles solo over the last few years, the list of recommendations and practices was excellent. The author’s closing was succinct and useful.

Solo backpacking is a unique and personal journey that offers an unmatched sense of freedom, achievement, and connection to the natural world. By starting small, preparing meticulously, and embracing the solitude, you’ll discover not just the wonders of the wilderness, but also the depths of your own strength and resilience. So, gather your courage, plan your adventure, and step into the wild. The path less traveled is waiting for you, filled with beauty, challenges, and the promise of discovery.

The only thing that I would emphasize is what other hikers usually say — “it’s you hike, do it your way”.

The thing that I don’t do (probably should in new places) is carry a ‘hard copy’ map. I study maps before taking off, learn the junctions, the features and mentally create a ‘hike flow’ over the map. Everybody works differently, embrace your way!
